This checks our sample text, read by one open-source parser from the PDF that Google Docs' File > Download > PDF produces. It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. What “Harvard-style” means here
Harvard's Mignone Center for Career Success publishes a guide to writing a strong resume and its own resume templates. If you're a Harvard student, start there. Our Classic template is our own design that follows the same broad conventions, rebuilt for Google Docs and tested with a parser. In our reading of the official guide (October 2026), it recommends:
- Sections ordered by importance, with the newest entries first inside each one.
- Bullets that start with an action verb and are phrases, not full sentences or “I” statements.
- Numbers wherever you can show the size of what you did.
- Consistent formatting for emphasis, and a layout that survives conversion to PDF.
- No photo, age or gender, no list of references, and no lines that start with a date.
How our version differs
- Font. We use Georgia, a serif that comes with Google Docs, Windows and macOS, so your .docx looks the same on a recruiter's computer.
- Section names. Leadership and activities go under “Projects & Activities”. That name is one the open-source parser we test with recognizes, and it reads every field we score on our sample. It has no field for a job's or school's location, so those are shown but not scored.
- Dates on the right. Aligned with a tab stop, not a table, so they don't drift when you edit.
Want the cover letter too? Switch the preview above to Cover letter: it uses the same name header and fonts. Other schools' formats are summarized on our university resume formats page.

Questions
- Is this the official Harvard resume template?
- No. It's our own template in a similar style. Harvard's career office publishes its official templates on its website, and we link to them above.
- Can I use a Harvard-style resume if I didn't go to Harvard?
- Yes. The format itself (education first, one column, short bullets with results) is common across finance, consulting and law. Just don't call it a Harvard resume.
- Is there a Harvard-style CV or cover letter?
- The Classic set includes a matching cover letter and references page. For an A4 CV, switch the paper size above, or see our CV templates.
- How long should it be?
- One page is the norm for students and early-career applicants. The template leaves room for one more bullet per job.
