This checks our sample text, read by one open-source parser from the PDF that Google Docs' File > Download > PDF produces. It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. Anyone can rerun it: the test repository has the PDF (SHA-256 2f2d914abf8e…), the expected values and the raw results. How we test
The UK CV format
In the UK the document you send with a job application is a CV, not a resume. The government's National Careers Service sets out what it should look like. In our own words:
- A clear font at 11 pt or larger, such as Arial, with headings and bullet points so it's easy to scan. Our template uses Arial at 11 pt.
- A short profile at the top: a few lines on who you are and what you're looking for. Many people call it a personal statement.
- Work history newest first, with a few lines per role on what you did and what came of it.
- No age, date of birth, marital status or nationality. None of them belong on a UK CV.
- No referees' contact details on the CV. A line saying references are available on request is enough; keep the details on a separate references page.
UK-specific details
- Use British spelling throughout: organised, analysed, programme.
- Write degrees the UK way, for example “BSc (Hons) Economics, First Class” or “2:1”. List A-levels with grades if you're early in your career.
- Leave the photo off. It isn't expected in the UK.
- Use A4. The template opens in A4 here; the same layout is available in US Letter if you also apply to North America.
- Two pages is common once you have a few years of experience. Graduates can usually fit one. The sample shows a two-page CV.
A note on parsers
The open-source parser we test with only knows US-style phone numbers and “City, ST” locations. On our UK sample it doesn't pick up the +44 number or any of the “Manchester, UK” style locations, so we leave those out of the score. The text is still on the page for anyone reading it. The 63 fields we do score, from name and email to every job, date and bullet, all read correctly; how we test has the details.
Questions
- What's the difference between a UK CV and a US resume?
- Mostly length and naming. A UK CV is often two pages and opens with a short profile; a US resume is usually one page. Both are one column, newest experience first, with no photo.
- Should I include a photo on a UK CV?
- No. UK employers don't expect one.
- Does this template work in Microsoft Word?
- Yes. Download the .docx, or copy to Google Docs and later use File > Download > Microsoft Word. Arial is installed on Windows and macOS.
- Is there a matching cover letter?
- Yes. Switch the preview above to Cover letter. It uses UK date style and a formal sign-off.
