What goes on a college student resume

Recruiters reading student resumes know you don't have years of experience. They look for evidence that you finish things and work with people. These sections cover that, in this order:

  1. Education. School, degree, expected graduation date and GPA if it's 3.0 or above. Add a line of relevant coursework for the job you're applying to.
  2. Experience. Part-time jobs count: a library desk, a restaurant, tutoring. Write what you were trusted with and what changed because of you, with numbers where you have them.
  3. Projects and activities. Clubs, class projects, volunteering, a hackathon. Put your role in the heading, like “Pre-Health Society, Events Chair”.
  4. Skills. Software, lab techniques, languages. Skip soft skills like “team player”; show them in your bullets instead.

Writing bullets when you don't have much experience

Start each bullet with a verb, say what you did, and end with a result. “Helped customers” tells a recruiter nothing; “Handled the register and online pickup orders on weekend shifts of up to 300 customers” shows you can be trusted with a busy shift. Our Student template has sample bullets written this way.

Internship resumes

For an internship, keep it to one page and put the most relevant section right after education. For a software internship that's usually projects, which is why many CS students use the Jake's Resume layout. For finance and consulting, the Classic template follows the format most career offices recommend.

High school students

The same templates work. Replace the college entry with your high school, add honors and AP classes as bullets, and lean on activities, volunteering and summer jobs. One page is plenty.

Questions

Should I put my GPA on my resume?
Include it if it's 3.0 or higher, or if the employer asks for it. Write it as 3.6/4.0 so there's no doubt about the scale.
How long should a student resume be?
One page. Our one-page guide shows what to cut first if you run over.
Do I need a cover letter for an internship?
Often it's optional, but a short one helps when you're applying to a specific team. Every template here comes with a matching cover letter.
Can I list class projects?
Yes. Treat a substantial class project like a job: give it a name, your role and two bullets about what you built or found.
