About this example

Hannah's summary covers her unit, years, degree, license and certifications in two lines. Bullets describe patient load and the work beyond bedside care, like charge shifts and the falls project. Licenses and systems have their own lines at the bottom so they're easy to find.

How to write a nursing resume

License and certifications first

Hiring managers check your RN license, state and certifications like BLS and ACLS before anything else. Put them where they can't be missed.

Describe your unit

Name the unit type, bed count and typical patient load. "32-bed med-surg, 5 to 6 patients" says more than "provided patient care".

Show the work beyond bedside care

Charge shifts, precepting and quality projects show you're ready for more responsibility.

Name your charting system

Epic, Cerner and MEDITECH appear in job postings. Hospitals like nurses who already know their system.

Cover letter lines for a nursing role

An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.

Opening paragraph
I'm applying for the Registered Nurse position on your step-down unit. For four years I've cared for five to six patients per shift on a 32-bed med-surg unit, and I've worked about six shifts a month as relief charge nurse.
Closing paragraph
I'd welcome the chance to talk about the unit and to shadow a shift if that's helpful. Thank you for your consideration.

Common mistakes on nursing resumes

  • Listing tasks every nurse does. Giving medications and charting are expected. Spend bullets on what's specific to you.
  • Missing the license number's state. Write the state and whether it's a compact license. Recruiters check eligibility first.
  • Clinical rotations after years of experience. Once you have two years of nursing work, drop student rotations and keep only the degree.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Registered Nurses (O*NET-SOC 29-1141.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
