About this example
Rachel's summary puts her grade levels and license in the first line, because certification is what districts screen for first. Each job has one result in student numbers and one line about working with families. Her master's degree is short: the license matters more than the coursework.
How to write a teacher resume
Put your license up front
Schools screen for the right certification first. Name the state, the license and your endorsements, with the grade-level or subject endorsement first and extras like ESOL or special education after it.
Show growth in students
Teachers adapt lessons and track progress. A before-and-after number, like reading levels or test scores, is the most persuasive line you can write.
Mention families
Talking with parents and guardians is part of the job. Say how you keep families informed and in what languages.
List the tools your district uses
Google Classroom, Seesaw, i-Ready and Lexia show up in job postings. Use their exact names.
Cover letter lines for a teacher role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the third grade teaching position at Maple Grove Elementary. In my current class of 26, nine students are English learners, and last year the share reading at grade level rose from 58% to 77%.
I'd love to visit your school and talk about how I run small-group reading. Thank you for your time.
Common mistakes on teacher resumes
- A teaching philosophy on the resume. Save it for the cover letter or the interview. The resume should show what happened in your classroom.
- Duties every teacher has. "Planned lessons and graded papers" is true of everyone. Pick the work that made a difference and give a result.
- Leaving out your certification. If the license isn't easy to find, some districts skip the resume. Put it in the summary or its own section.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Elementary School Teachers, Except Special Education (O*NET-SOC 25-2021.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license.
