This checks our sample text, read by one open-source parser from the PDF that Google Docs' File > Download > PDF produces. It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. Anyone can rerun it: the test repository has the PDF (SHA-256 08b42e65e898…), the expected values and the raw results. How we test
About this example
Elena is four years into practice, so experience comes first, with each project named by type, size and phase. Both degrees are listed because the professional degree matters for licensure. Her exam progress is spelled out in the last section.
How to write a architecture resume
Name project type, size and phase
Architects work on buildings through phases from schematic design to construction. "64-unit affordable housing, DD through permit" says exactly what you did.
Show coordination work
Working with engineers and consultants, handling RFIs and site visits shows you can take a project into construction.
Be specific about licensure progress
Firms want to know where you are: AXP hours, ARE divisions passed, expected license date.
Link the portfolio
As with designers, the portfolio does the showing. Keep the resume clean and put the link in the header.
Cover letter lines for a architecture role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the Architectural Designer position on your housing team. At Fenwick Hale Studio I produced the construction documents for a 64-unit affordable housing building and tracked 140 RFIs through construction.
My portfolio is at elenapetrov.com/portfolio, and I'd be glad to talk through the project. Thank you for your time.
Common mistakes on architecture resumes
- Renderings on the resume. Applicant tracking systems keep the file you upload, but many can't read text inside images, and those that use OCR can misread it. Drawings on the resume are a parsing risk with little upside. Keep them in the portfolio.
- Every studio project from school. After a few years in practice, one thesis line is enough.
- "Assisted with" everything. Say what you actually produced: drawings, models, specs, reports.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Architects, Except Landscape and Naval (O*NET-SOC 17-1011.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
