It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. About this example
Daniel's summary is two lines: years of experience, what he designs and his Engineer Intern certificate. Each job leads with a design or test result in numbers. The co-op stays because it shows hands-on shop work, which mechanical hiring managers ask about.
How to write a engineering resume
Lead with what you designed
Mechanical engineers design, test and fix equipment. Start bullets with the part or system and what changed: lower cost, fewer parts, longer life.
Show failure analysis
Investigating why something broke and recommending a fix is a big part of the job. A root-cause bullet with the result is often the strongest line on the page.
Name your CAD and analysis tools
Recruiters search for SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS and MATLAB by name. Put them in the skills section and in the bullet where you used them.
Mention licenses early
An Engineer Intern certificate (called EI or EIT depending on the state) or a PE license belongs in the summary or skills, with the state. Don't call an EI a license; only the PE is one. It's one of the first things hiring managers check.
Cover letter lines for a engineering role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the Mechanical Design Engineer role on your pump products team. At Harrowfield Pump Company I redesigned the impeller housing on a 50 HP pump line, cutting the part count from 14 to 9 and the unit cost by $310.
I'd be glad to walk through the redesign and the testing behind it. Thank you for considering my application.
Common mistakes on engineering resumes
- A list of software and nothing else. Knowing SolidWorks isn't the point. Say what you designed with it and what happened next.
- Results without units. "Improved efficiency" means nothing to an engineer. Give the number: dollars, percent, hours, cycles.
- Every school project. After a few years of work, keep one capstone line at most. Your work projects carry more weight.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Mechanical Engineers (O*NET-SOC 17-2141.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
