  • github.com/kevintran: parser keeps one URL. It's in the extracted text.

This checks our sample text, read by one open-source parser from the PDF that Google Docs' File > Download > PDF produces. It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. Anyone can rerun it: the test repository has the PDF (SHA-256 77f10f7964c5…), the expected values and the raw results. How we test

About this example

Kevin is a senior, so education comes first and the page uses the dense Jake's layout. Two internships give real numbers, and three projects show work outside class. Skills are split into languages, frameworks and tools so a recruiter can scan them quickly.

How to write a computer science resume

Say what you built and what it changed

Software developers design, test and fix systems. A good bullet names the system, the change and a measurable result, like faster jobs or fewer errors.

Projects count when you're early

Without much work history, two or three real projects with users or hard technical problems carry the page. Link your GitHub.

Group your skills

Split languages, frameworks and tools so a recruiter can find Python or Kubernetes in a second.

Keep it to one page

New graduates and interns use one page. The Jake's layout fits education, two internships and projects without crowding.

Cover letter lines for a computer science role

An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.

Opening paragraph
I'm applying for the New Grad Software Engineer role on your payments platform team. Last summer at Ferncastle Payments I added idempotency keys to the refunds API and cut a reconciliation job from 40 minutes to 6.
Closing paragraph
I'd be glad to talk through the design choices behind that work. Thank you for considering my application.

Common mistakes on computer science resumes

  • Skill bars and ratings. "Python: 4 out of 5" tells nobody anything, and parsers can't read the graphic. List the skill and show it in a bullet.
  • Course projects everyone did. A to-do app from a class tutorial won't stand out. Pick projects with real users, real data or a hard problem.
  • Two columns. Two-column layouts often scramble in applicant tracking systems. One column is safer and easier to scan.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Software Developers (O*NET-SOC 15-1252.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
