This checks our sample text, read by one open-source parser from the PDF that Google Docs' File > Download > PDF produces. It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. Anyone can rerun it: the test repository has the PDF (SHA-256 3f4872f914b4…), the expected values and the raw results. How we test
About this example
Nathan's strongest bullets name the question, the tool and what the business did with the answer; the rest show the reporting and data quality work that fills much of an analyst's week. A public project shows he works end to end on his own. The tools he uses daily are listed by exact name, since recruiters search for them.
How to write a data analyst resume
Question, method, decision
Analysts collect data, build reports and dashboards, and explain what they mean. A strong bullet says what the business did with your answer.
Name the stack
SQL, Python, dbt, Looker, Tableau, Snowflake: recruiters search for these exact words. Put them in skills and in the bullets.
Show reliability work
Tests, documentation and fewer broken reports matter to teams who've been burned by bad data.
Add a public project if you're switching in
A small dashboard built on public data shows you can do the work end to end.
Cover letter lines for a data analyst role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the Senior Data Analyst role on your growth team. At Talus & Tern Outdoor Supply, a cohort analysis I ran showed free-shipping customers returned twice as often, and the threshold change that followed saved $380K a year.
I'd be glad to walk you through that analysis and the dashboards I maintain. Thank you for your time.
Common mistakes on data analyst resumes
- Tools without outcomes. "Used SQL and Tableau" is a skills line, not a bullet. Say what the analysis found.
- Charts and logos on the resume. Keep visuals in your portfolio or GitHub. Many parsers can't read charts or logos, and the ones that try can garble the lines around them.
- Overstating the data science. If you ran a regression, say so. Don't call it machine learning unless it was.
