It isn't a score, and it doesn't tell you how Workday, Greenhouse or any other hiring system will read your own resume. About this example

Priya has five years of work, so experience comes before education and the degree takes two lines. The summary names the two industries she has worked in, because finance hiring managers often prefer someone who knows the business. A short internship stays at the bottom of the experience section: it's old, but it shows she has been around accounting since college.

How to write a finance resume

Say what the model decided

Finance analysts build models to answer a question, such as whether to raise prices or approve a project. Write the decision your model fed into and who made it, not only that you "built financial models".

Put accuracy in numbers

Forecasting is the core of most FP&A roles. If your forecast error went down, give the before and after. If you don't have that, give the size of what you forecast, like a $240M division or 11 cost centers.

Name who read your reports

Reports and charts for managers are a big part of the job. "Used by the CFO in pricing decisions" tells a recruiter more than "created dashboards".

List the tools recruiters search for

Excel is expected, so say which parts you use, like Power Query, VBA or pivot tables. Add your BI tool (Power BI, Tableau) and the ERP or planning system you work in.

Cover letter lines for a finance role

An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.

Opening paragraph
I'm applying for the Senior Financial Analyst role on your FP&A team. For the past three years I've owned the monthly forecast for a $240M freight division, and over four quarters I brought our operating income forecast error from 9% down to 3%.
Closing paragraph
I'd be glad to walk you through the pricing model I built and how the CFO used it. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Common mistakes on finance resumes

  • Duties instead of results. "Responsible for budgeting and forecasting" fits every finance resume. Say how big the budget was and what changed because of your work.
  • Every number but the one that matters. A resume full of percentages can hide what you actually did. Give the size of what you were responsible for and the result of your work, and leave out company-wide figures you didn't influence.
  • A vague CFA line. Use CFA Institute's own wording, such as "Passed Level I of the CFA Program" or "Level II Candidate in the CFA Program". You can only call yourself a candidate while you're registered for an exam or waiting for results. "Pursuing CFA" leaves the reader guessing.
  • Two pages too early. With under five years of experience, a finance resume should fit on one page. Cut coursework and older internships first.
