About this example

Marcus is still a student, so education sits at the top with GPA and the investment club role. The two internships carry the page, each described by deal type and size rather than client name. A leadership section with the stock pitch result fills the space a full-time analyst would use for a second job.

How to write a investment banking resume

Describe deals by type and size

Banks hire analysts to build models and prepare deal materials. Say what kind of deal it was (sell-side M&A, LBO, debt raise), the size and the industry. Client names usually stay confidential, and so can other details; include only what's public or what your bank allows you to share.

Name the models you built

Merger, LBO, DCF and comparables are the core of the job. Write which ones you built yourself and what they were used for, such as a pitch or a buyer list.

Show you can carry the process

Analysts keep trackers, check numbers in the data room and draft memoranda. One bullet about that kind of work shows you can be trusted with the details.

Keep education at the top

Students and new graduates put education first, with GPA if it's 3.5 or higher. Banks screen on it, so don't make them look for it.

Cover letter lines for a investment banking role

An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.

Opening paragraph
I'm applying for the Investment Banking Analyst position in your industrials group. Last summer in M&A at Calloway Brothers, I built the merger model for a $1.2B sell-side process and drafted 14 pages of the information memorandum.
Closing paragraph
I'd welcome the chance to talk about the deal work and how I'd fit with your team. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Common mistakes on investment banking resumes

  • A summary at the top. Banking resumes are read in seconds. A summary pushes your school and deals down the page. Leave it off.
  • Deal names you aren't allowed to share. Leaving out the client's name isn't enough on its own. Size, sector and timing can identify an unannounced deal too, so describe only what's public or what your bank has cleared, and keep it general when in doubt, such as "sell-side sale of a consumer products company". Ask your staffing or compliance team if you're unsure.
  • Clubs with no role. "Member, Investment Club" says little. Give your role and what you did, like leading a team or pitching a stock.
  • More than one page. Analyst resumes are one page, no exceptions. Cut high school activities and older part-time jobs first.
