About this example
Grace has two years at a consultancy, so experience leads. Her main bullets follow one pattern: the client problem, what she did and the result. The others show the day-to-day work of a junior consultant, like status decks and issue logs. A pro bono project and a club role show the same skills for an applicant this early in her career.
How to write a consulting resume
Problem, work, result
Management consultants gather information, analyze it and recommend changes. Your strongest bullets should show all three and end with a result, ideally a number. A concrete outcome without one, like a recommendation the client adopted, still counts.
Show who you presented to
Presenting findings to a CFO or COO tells firms you can handle senior clients.
Include implementation work
Training staff or writing manuals after a recommendation shows you can see a change through, not just suggest it.
One page, education near the top
Consulting firms expect one page. Recent graduates keep education first; with two or more years of work, experience can lead.
Cover letter lines for a consulting role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the Consultant position in your operations practice. At Halvorsen Advisory Group I mapped order-to-cash for a $900M distributor through 30 interviews, and the changes we proposed freed $14M of working capital.
I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I approach client problems. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Common mistakes on consulting resumes
- Bullets that end without a result. Consulting screeners look for impact. If a bullet doesn't end in a number or decision, rewrite it or cut it.
- Jargon instead of facts. "Drove synergies across workstreams" says nothing. Describe the actual work.
- Leaving out case competitions and pro bono work. For early-career applicants these show the same skills firms test in interviews.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Management Analysts (O*NET-SOC 13-1111.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
