About this example

Sofia's portfolio link sits in the contact line where a recruiter will look first. The resume stays plain on purpose: the portfolio shows her style, and the resume lists results the portfolio can't, like sales after a redesign or a reprint that was avoided.

How to write a graphic designer resume

Link the portfolio in the header

Designers are hired on their work. Put the portfolio link next to your email so nobody has to search for it.

Describe the result, not just the deliverable

Layouts, logos and packaging are the job. Say what the design achieved: sales, engagement, a reprint avoided, setup time saved.

Show print and production skills

Preparing files for print and working with vendors is easy to forget and valued by employers. One bullet shows you can ship.

Keep the resume itself plain

A heavily designed resume can break in applicant tracking systems. Let the portfolio show your style and keep the resume readable.

Cover letter lines for a graphic designer role

An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.

Opening paragraph
I'm applying for the Senior Designer role on your packaging team. At Juniper & Vale I led a redesign across 18 products for a regional coffee roaster, and retail sales rose 22% in the first two quarters.
Closing paragraph
My portfolio is at sofiamarquez.design/work, and I'd be happy to walk you through the packaging project. Thank you for your time.

Common mistakes on graphic designer resumes

  • Icons and skill bars. They look nice and parse badly. The recruiter can still open your file, but many applicant tracking systems can't read a skill bar or icon, so that information may be missing from the parsed profile they search.
  • Listing every Adobe app. Name the ones you use daily. A long list of tools you've opened once looks like padding.
  • No link to the work. A designer resume without a portfolio link usually gets skipped.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for Graphic Designers (O*NET-SOC 27-1024.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
