About this example
Jasmine's title doesn't show the supervisor work she already does, so the skills section comes first and names it: opening and closing, training, scheduling. The experience section then backs it up with numbers from the store.
How to write a retail resume
Show supervisor work even without the title
Training new hires, running opening or closing, handling complaints and making schedules are supervisor duties. If you do them, list them first.
Use store numbers
Sales volume, number of staff, transactions per shift and inventory results make retail work concrete.
Customer service with an example
Every retail resume says "excellent customer service". Show it with a result, like loyalty sign-ups or a resolved complaint.
Name the systems
POS and scheduling systems differ by chain. Listing yours shows you'll need less training.
Cover letter lines for a retail role
An opening and a closing written for the person in this example. Swap in your own numbers and the role you're applying for. Every template comes with a matching cover letter for the middle.
I'm applying for the Assistant Store Manager position. As lead sales associate at Cholla & Clay Home Goods, I open and close a store doing about $2.4M a year and handle weekly scheduling for 18 people.
I'd love to talk about how I'd support your store manager and team. Thank you for considering my application.
Common mistakes on retail resumes
- Listing every task in the store. Stocking shelves and running the register are expected. Pick the work that shows responsibility.
- Leaving out short jobs entirely. A one-year retail job still shows reliability. Keep it to one line rather than deleting it.
- No numbers at all. Even small numbers help: customers per shift, items counted, people trained.
Templates that suit retail resumes
Blank versions with a cover letter and references page, in Letter and A4.

The writing advice draws on the tasks and tools listed for First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers (O*NET-SOC 41-1011.00) in the O*NET 31.0 Database by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, used under the CC BY 4.0 license. We rewrote it as resume advice. The person, employers and schools in the example are fictional, and the example is written as of fall 2026, so dates and years of experience count to then.
